    • Nutritious beverages like milk and juice may be displaced by low-quality sweetened beverages in children's diets.

    • To analyze changes in sweetened beverage, milk, and 100% fruit juice consumption from 5th to 8th grade.
    • Investigate the relationship between consumption of different beverage types during this developmental period.

    • Decreases in milk intake were larger for children consuming daily sweetened beverages.
    • Changes in milk consumption were not significantly associated with changes in sweetened beverage intake, but positively associated with changes in fruit juice intake.

    Conclusions:

    • Decreases in children's milk consumption from 5th to 8th grade were not linked to increased sweetened beverage intake.
    • Milk consumption changes were positively associated with fruit juice consumption changes, suggesting no displacement effect.
    • Focus should be on the overall dietary role of caloric beverages and balancing them with food and total fluid intake.
