Background:

  • The forced oscillation technique (FOT) can detect expiratory flow limitation using within-breath reactance (DX5).
  • Limited research exists on respiratory phase differences in the elderly population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide reference values for within-breath impedance measurements in asymptomatic elderly individuals.
  • To evaluate the performance of the DX5 method in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • 148 healthy, non-smoking elderly participants (age >70) from Bergen, Norway, underwent FOT using impulse oscillometry system (IOS).
  • Predictive equations for FOT parameters were developed using linear multiple regression.
  • DX5 was calculated from reactance variations at 5 Hz.

  • Reference values for whole-breath and within-breath impedance parameters were established for the elderly.
  • Higher resistance measurements were observed compared to previous studies.
