Background:

Professional healthcare requires ethical decision-making when faced with competing principles.
Ethical dilemmas are common in healthcare practice.
This study investigates ethical challenges faced by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs).

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the nature of ethical dilemmas encountered by IBCLCs.
To understand the strategies IBCLCs use to manage these dilemmas.
To develop a framework for managing ethical challenges in lactation consulting.

Main Methods:

Qualitative research methodology.
In-depth interviews with seven IBCLCs.
Thematic analysis of interview data.

The overarching theme identified was "Staying Mother-Centred."
A six-category framework for managing ethical dilemmas was developed: recognizing dilemma, identifying context, determining choices, strategies used, mother's choices, and follow-up.
