Summary

Cholinergic neurons in the brainstem project to multiple thalamic targets. This study reveals that some lateral dorsal tegmental (LDT) and pedunculopontine tegmental (PPT) neurons simultaneously innervate different thalamic nuclei, impacting complex behaviors.

Background:

  • Cholinergic neurons in the lateral dorsal tegmental (LDT) and pedunculopontine tegmental (PPT) nuclei primarily project to the thalamus.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether cholinergic neurons in the LDT and PPT nuclei project to more than one thalamic nucleus simultaneously.
  • To characterize the collateral projections of LDT-PPT neurons to distinct thalamic regions.

  • Microinjections of distinct fluorescently conjugated microbeads into the central-lateral nucleus and dorso-lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus.
  • Immunohistochemical identification of cholinergic somata in the LDT and PPT nuclei.
