Premenopausal women with thyrotoxicosis (overactive thyroid) have lower bone mineral density (BMD). Treatment for hyperthyroidism did not significantly improve lumbar spine BMD in this group.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Bone Metabolism

Background:

  • Thyrotoxicosis, a condition of excess thyroid hormones, is linked to bone loss and increased fracture risk.
  • Osteopenia and osteoporosis are potential complications of untreated hyperthyroidism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate bone mineral density (BMD) in premenopausal women with hyperthyroidism compared to euthyroid controls.
  • To assess the impact of antithyroid drug treatment on lumbar spine BMD in hyperthyroid patients.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 88 hyperthyroid patients and 65 age/sex-matched controls.
  • Lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) was measured.
  • Correlation between BMD and thyroid hormone levels (T4, T3) was analyzed.
  • BMD changes were assessed after 3 months of antithyroid drug treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Premenopausal hyperthyroid women exhibited significantly lower lumbar spine BMD compared to controls (1.233 vs 1.317 gm/cm2, p<0.05).
  • No significant linear correlation was found between BMD and T4 or T3 levels in thyrotoxicosis patients.
  • After 3 months of antithyroid drug treatment, lumbar spine BMD did not show significant improvement in hyperthyroid patients (1.258 vs 1.242 gm/cm2, p=0.02).

Conclusions:

  • Premenopausal women with hyperthyroidism have reduced bone mineral density in the lumbar spine.
  • Short-term treatment of hyperthyroidism with antithyroid drugs does not appear to increase lumbar spine BMD.
