Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Delayed epilepsy presents diagnostic challenges.
  • Understanding the utility of neuroimaging in these cases is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic yield of CT scans in patients with delayed epilepsy.
  • To determine the association between clinical/EEG findings and CT scan results.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 464 patients with delayed epilepsy.
  • Review of neurological examinations, electroencephalogram (EEG) studies, and computed tomography (CT) scans.

Main Results:

  • CT scans revealed abnormalities in 61% of patients.
  • Common CT findings included cerebrovascular diseases (16.4%), brain tumors (12.9%), and craniocerebral trauma (8.4%).
  • Abnormalities were more frequent with focal neurological signs and EEG suggesting partial seizures.

Conclusions:

  • CT scan is a mandatory tool for evaluating delayed epilepsy, irrespective of normal clinical or EEG findings.
  • Neuroimaging significantly contributes to identifying underlying pathologies in delayed epilepsy.
