The Spinal Cord

The spinal cord is the body’s major nerve tract of the central nervous system, communicating afferent sensory information from the periphery to the brain and efferent motor information from the brain to the body. The human spinal cord extends from the hole at the base of the skull, or foramen magnum, to the level of the first or second lumbar vertebra.

Summary

Background:

  • Spinal intradural schwannomas are uncommon tumors in the pediatric population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the demography, clinical presentation, and management of pediatric spinal intradural schwannomas.
  • To evaluate the surgical outcomes and functional recovery in this patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 21 pediatric patients (under 18) who underwent surgery for spinal intradural schwannomas between 1998 and 2008.
  • Analysis of clinical data, tumor characteristics, surgical findings, and postoperative outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Most common symptom was progressive myelopathy (86%); tumors were predominantly cervical or dorsal.
  • Gross total excision was achieved in 20 out of 21 patients.
  • All patients experienced neurological improvement in motor function and bladder control post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric spinal neurofibromas/schwannomas are rare but completely treatable.
  • Complete surgical excision is associated with excellent patient outcomes and functional recovery.
