Lipids: Dietary Sources and Requirements01:18

Lipids: Dietary Sources and Requirements

Lipids are an essential component of a balanced human diet. Triglycerides, which make up the majority of dietary lipids, are found in both saturated fats—commonly present in meat, dairy products, and certain tropical plants like coconut, and hydrogenated oils such as margarine and baking shortenings (trans fats)—and unsaturated fats, which are abundant in seeds, nuts, olive oil, and most vegetable oils. The main sources of cholesterol include egg yolks, various meats and organ meats, shellfish,...

Cholesterol: Significance and Regulation

Although not a source of energy, cholesterol plays a significant role as a foundational structure for bile salts, steroid hormones, and vitamin D, as well as being a crucial component of plasma membranes. Approximately 15% of blood cholesterol is derived from our diet, with the remainder synthesized from acetyl CoA by the liver and intestines. Cholesterol is eliminated from the body through its conversion into bile salts, which are eventually discarded in the feces.
Considering cholesterol and...

Atherosclerosis III: Management

Management of atherosclerosis involves an integrated strategy encompassing pharmacological treatment, surgical interventions, lifestyle changes, and nutrition therapy to address the multifactorial nature of the disease.Pharmacological TherapyA cornerstone of atherosclerosis management is the use of pharmacological agents. Statins, such as atorvastatin, are pivotal in inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that catalyzes an initial step in cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This reduction in...

Lipid-Lowering Drugs: Statins and Miscellaneous Agents

Hyperlipidemia, a medical condition often referred to as high cholesterol, is characterized by abnormally elevated levels of lipids in the bloodstream. When present in excess, these lipids, specifically cholesterol and triglycerides, can lead to serious health complications, often involving cardiovascular diseases. Illnesses like atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and pancreatitis have all been linked to untreated hyperlipidemia. This means controlling and regulating cholesterol and triglyceride...
Optimal Foraging00:48

Optimal Foraging

How animals obtain and eat their food is called foraging behavior. Foraging can include searching for plants and hunting for prey and depends on the species and environment.
Fats as Energy Storage Molecules01:06

Fats as Energy Storage Molecules

Triglycerides are a form of long-term energy storage molecules. They are made of glycerol and three fatty acids. To obtain energy from fat, triglycerides must first be broken down by hydrolysis into their two principal components, fatty acids and glycerol. This process, called lipolysis, takes place in the cytoplasm. The resulting fatty acids are oxidized by β-oxidation into acetyl-CoA, which is used by the Krebs cycle. The glycerol that is released from triglycerides after lipolysis directly...

Summary

Feeding ostriches Prosopis farcta beans for 30 days significantly altered key blood parameters. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, total protein, and globulin levels rose, while low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, inorganic phosphorus, and gamma-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT) activity declined.

Area of Science:

  • Avian nutrition
  • Biochemistry
  • Veterinary medicine

Background:

  • Prosopis farcta is a plant species with potential nutritional value.
  • Ostriches (Struthio camelus) are large avian species with unique physiological characteristics.
  • Understanding the impact of novel feed components on ostrich health is crucial for sustainable farming.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the biochemical and physiological effects of feeding Prosopis farcta beans to male ostriches.
  • To assess changes in key blood parameters following a 30-day dietary intervention with Prosopis farcta.

Main Methods:

  • Ten male blue-neck ostriches were used in a 30-day feeding trial.
  • Blood samples were collected at the beginning (day 0) and end (day 30) of the experiment.
  • Serum levels of lipids (HDL, LDL, cholesterol, triglyceride), proteins (total protein, albumin, globulin), minerals (calcium, inorganic phosphorus), and liver enzymes (AST, ALT, γ-GT) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Significant increases were observed in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, total serum protein, and globulin levels.
  • Significant decreases were noted in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, inorganic phosphorus, and gamma-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT) activity.
  • Changes in triglyceride, albumin, cholesterol, calcium, AST, and ALT were not statistically significant within the study period.

Conclusions:

  • Dietary supplementation with Prosopis farcta beans positively influences lipid profiles and protein metabolism in ostriches.
  • The observed decrease in LDL cholesterol and γ-GT activity suggests potential benefits for cardiovascular and liver health.
  • Prosopis farcta beans may be a valuable component of ostrich feed, warranting further investigation into optimal inclusion levels and long-term effects.
