  • Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was utilized to quantify aromatase mRNA levels.
  • Intratumoral estrogen concentrations, including estradiol, were measured.

    • Aromatase mRNA levels were significantly higher in colon carcinoma compared to non-neoplastic mucosa.
    • Aromatase immunoreactivity was observed in 65% of colon carcinoma cases, localized in the cytoplasm of carcinoma cells.
    • Aromatase expression showed a positive association with intratumoral estrogen levels, particularly estradiol in men.
    • Aromatase immunoreactivity correlated positively with tubular differentiation and inversely with Ki-67 labeling index.

    Conclusions:

    • Colon carcinoma expresses functional aromatase, leading to local estrogen synthesis within tumor tissues.
    • These findings highlight the potential role of estrogen in colon carcinoma development and progression.
    • Further research into estrogen's actions in colon carcinoma is warranted, potentially informing therapeutic strategies.
