Midwifery networks can help overcome challenges in evidence-based practice. These practice-based research networks support midwives in learning collectively and fostering best clinical practices for women's health care.

Background:

Limited documentation exists on how practice-based midwifery networks influence knowledge transfer in women's health.
A qualitative study explored midwives' perspectives on evidence-based practice and the potential of organized networks.

Purpose of the Study:

To understand midwives' views on evidence-based practice.
To explore how a midwifery practice-based research network could facilitate knowledge transfer and support clinical practice.

Main Methods:

Qualitative interviews were conducted with 23 midwives from eight practices.
Participatory action research and organizational ethnography guided data collection.

Main Results:

Midwives identified challenges to evidence-based practice, including influential persons, finances, resources, and cultural perceptions.
Midwives perceived research networks as valuable for collective learning and practice support.
Two main areas of discourse were identified: challenges and strategies for fostering best practice.

Conclusions:

Evidence-based practice implementation faces significant challenges in daily midwifery settings.
Practice-based research networks show potential for supporting clinicians in examining evidence and building coalitions for best practices.
Future research will focus on developing collective strategies with midwives to improve practice.
