Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Osteomas are benign bone tumors that rarely occur in the oral cavity of domestic animals.
  • Lingual masses in dogs can present with various clinical signs, including lethargy and appetite changes.

Observation:

  • An 11-year-old Belgian Shepherd presented with progressive lethargy, decreased appetite, and panting.
  • A pedunculated, irregular, multi-lobulated mass (4x2 cm) was found at the base of the tongue.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the lingual mass was performed.
  • Histological examination confirmed a lingual osteoma with clear surgical margins.
  • No recurrence was noted eight months post-surgery before the dog's euthanasia for unrelated reasons.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of a lingual osteoma in a canine patient.
  • Lingual osteomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis for tongue masses in dogs, particularly pedunculated masses at the tongue base.
