Background:

  • Neuralgic amyotrophy (NA) is characterized by sudden onset of severe pain and subsequent muscle weakness, often affecting the brachial plexus.
  • Persistent pain and functional deficits are common challenges in NA rehabilitation.
  • Current rehabilitation strategies may not adequately address the multifactorial nature of NA-related impairments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify factors associated with persistent pain in NA.
  • To determine which outcome measures effectively capture these factors.
  • To inform recommendations for NA rehabilitation outcome measures and intervention targets.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional survey data from 248 patients with idiopathic or hereditary NA across two tertiary referral clinics.
  • Utilized custom screening questionnaires and established tools: Shoulder Rating Questionnaire, Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), Shoulder Disability Questionnaire (SDQ), and Overall Disability Sum Score.
  • Analyzed correlations between pain, functional limitations, and specific impairments.
