REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) is a sleep disorder characterized by the absence of muscle paralysis that normally occurs during the REM phase of sleep. Sleep is an essential physiological process vital to maintaining overall well-being. The reticular activating system (RAS), a network of neurons in the brainstem, regulates wakefulness and sleep. While it may seem passive, sleep consists of distinct cycles, each with its unique characteristics and functions. Two key sleep phases are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and  rapid eye movement (REM).

Summary

Short sleep questionnaires used in population studies show poor agreement with objective sleep measures from actigraphy. This finding impacts the reliability of sleep data in large-scale epidemiologic research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the concordance between a brief, self-reported sleep questionnaire and objective sleep measures.
  • To assess the suitability of short sleep questionnaires for epidemiologic research.

Main Methods:

  • Participants (Western Australian women, 18-80 years) completed a sleep questionnaire.
  • Objective sleep data were collected using wrist actigraphy for 7 nights.
  • Subjective reports were compared with actigraphy data using weighted kappa and delta statistics.

Main Results:

  • The 3-item sleep questionnaire demonstrated poor agreement with actigraphy-derived sleep measures.
  • Kappa values ranged from -0.19 to 0.14, indicating low concordance.

Conclusions:

  • Brief sleep questionnaires commonly used in epidemiologic studies do not reliably reflect objective sleep patterns.
  • The findings question the validity of sleep data obtained through such methods in large-scale research.
