This study developed the Holistic Wellness Assessment (HWA) for young adults, incorporating financial wellness. The HWA is a psychometrically sound tool for measuring wellness awareness and outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Health Sciences
- Educational Measurement
Background:
- Young adults face unique wellness challenges, including financial stress.
- Existing wellness models may not fully capture the multidimensional needs of this demographic.
- A psychometrically sound instrument is needed to assess holistic wellness in young adults.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and psychometrically evaluate the Holistic Wellness Assessment (HWA).
- To incorporate financial wellness as a novel dimension alongside traditional wellness factors.
- To create a developmentally appropriate tool for young adults.
Main Methods:
- A single-group, cross-sectional design was employed for initial psychometric analysis.
- 2,090 university students completed an online 285-item HWA.
- Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify underlying dimensions of wellness.
Main Results:
- The HWA revealed eight dimensions: Self-Regard, Self-Awareness and Responsibility, Sustainability, Relational, Risk Prevention, Spirituality, Physical Health, and Health Care Maintenance.
- Three new dimensions (Self-Regard, Self-Awareness and Responsibility, Sustainability) emerged, including financial wellness.
- Four dimensions aligned with existing wellness models.
Conclusions:
- The HWA demonstrates initial psychometric validity for assessing wellness in young adults.
- The instrument may be valuable for evaluating wellness curricula and behavior change interventions.
- The findings contribute to the expansion of wellness models and theories.
