Atypical Pneumonia01:14

Atypical Pneumonia

Atypical pneumonia, often caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is a form of pulmonary infection that differs from the classical presentation of bacterial pneumonia in both its cause and clinical symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pleomorphic bacterium notable for its lack of a rigid cell wall. This structural characteristic imparts resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and significantly influences the bacterium’s behavior within the human host.Other pathogens responsible for the disease include...
Bacterial Phylum Actinobacteria01:30

Bacterial Phylum Actinobacteria

Coryneform bacteria are gram-positive, aerobic, nonmotile rods that exhibit irregular, club-shaped, or V-shaped arrangements. Their V-shape results from snapping division, where the inner cell wall layer forms the cross-wall, while the outer layer remains intact until it ruptures on one side, causing the daughter cells to bend away. The primary genera are Corynebacterium and Arthrobacter. Corynebacterium includes diverse species, ranging from saprophytes to pathogens like Corynebacterium...
Acne Infection01:27

Acne Infection

Acne is a multifactorial skin condition primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, with a global prevalence estimated to exceed 75% in this demographic. The condition is characterized by the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules, and, in severe cases, cysts, particularly in areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the face, neck, chest, and back. The pathogenesis involves increased sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, colonization by...
Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.
Brain Abscess l: Introduction01:26

Brain Abscess l: Introduction

A brain abscess is a focal, intracerebral infection characterized by a localized collection of pus within the brain parenchyma, resulting from microbial invasion and the body’s inflammatory response. It progresses through stages: early and late cerebritis, followed by early and late capsule formation, reflecting tissue destruction, immune response, and eventual encapsulation.Etiology and PathogenesisCausative organisms vary with source and host factors, often involving polymicrobial infections,...

Diversity of Protists II

Alveolates are a group of organisms recognized by the presence of alveoli, which are cytoplasmic sacs located beneath the cell membrane. While their function remains uncertain, alveoli may help regulate water balance by controlling how much water enters and leaves the cell. In dinoflagellates, these structures may serve as armor plates. There are three major types of alveolates: ciliates, which move using cilia; dinoflagellates, which use flagella for movement; and apicomplexans, which are...

Summary

Periapical actinomycosis, a rare infection of the jaw, can mimic other conditions. Early histopathological examination of surgical tissue aids in diagnosing this challenging condition for effective antibiotic treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic bacterial infection caused by Actinomyces species.
  • It presents with abscesses, fibrosis, and draining fistulas, often containing sulfur granules.
  • Diagnosis is challenging due to non-specific clinical features and varied presentations.

Observation:

  • Periapical actinomycosis is an exceptionally rare manifestation in the maxillofacial region.
  • This case involved a persistent, recurrent draining fistula in the periapical region of endodontically treated teeth.
  • The condition was incidentally discovered during histopathological examination.

Findings:

  • Histopathology is crucial for identifying Actinomycosis, especially in periapical lesions.

  • The study discusses potential routes of Actinomyces entry into the periapical tissues.
  • Prompt histopathological analysis of surgical specimens can lead to accurate diagnosis.
  • Implications:

    • Sending periapical surgical tissues for histopathology is vital for diagnosing rare infections like actinomycosis.
    • Accurate diagnosis facilitates appropriate antibiotic therapy, leading to improved patient outcomes.
    • This highlights the importance of considering actinomycosis in persistent periapical inflammatory conditions.
