  • 137 asthmatic adults were randomized to high-antioxidant (5 fruit, 2 veg daily) or low-antioxidant (≤2 veg, 1 fruit daily) diets for 14 days.
  • Following the diet phase, a parallel supplementation trial involved placebo or lycopene (45 mg/day) for low-antioxidant diet participants.
  • Intervention continued until week 14 or asthma exacerbation.

Main Results:

  • Low-antioxidant diet led to reduced lung function (FEV1, FVC) and increased C-reactive protein at 14 days.
  • High-antioxidant diet intake was associated with a longer time to asthma exacerbation.
  • Participants on a low-antioxidant diet were 2.26 times more likely to experience an exacerbation.
  • Lycopene supplementation in the low-antioxidant group showed no significant difference in inflammation or clinical outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Dietary modification, specifically increasing carotenoid intake through whole foods, impacts clinical asthma outcomes.
