Background:

Nicotine/tobacco use is a major public health issue, yet often overlooked in general substance abuse research.
A previous study indicated limited inclusion of nicotine in articles on drug abuse/dependence.
This study re-evaluates the focus on nicotine in scientific literature concerning drug abuse/dependence.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine if nicotine/tobacco dependence is adequately represented in general drug abuse/addiction journals.
To assess the consistency in the inclusion of nicotine when discussing substance abuse/dependence.

Main Methods:

A random sample of 100 articles from leading drug abuse/addiction journals published in 2010-2011 was analyzed.
Articles were selected based on titles containing terms like "drug/substance abuse/dependence/use" or "addiction" and excluding specific drug mentions.
The focus of each article on nicotine/tobacco versus alcohol or illicit drugs was assessed.

Main Results:

Only 25% of the analyzed articles focused on nicotine/tobacco dependence or smoking.
In contrast, 82% of articles focused on alcohol or illicit drugs (p < .001).
A small fraction (4%) explicitly mentioned the exclusion of tobacco/nicotine dependence.

Conclusions:

Findings suggest that nicotine/tobacco dependence is often treated as distinct from other substance dependencies by researchers.
Inconsistent inclusion of nicotine in "drug/substance abuse/dependence/use" literature may obscure its prevalence and impact.
The study recommends using "non-nicotine" qualifiers to enhance clarity in scientific communication regarding substance abuse.
