Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the gender gap in mobility difficulty in 70 countries worldwide.
  • To investigate the influence of sociodemographic and health factors on this gender gap.
  • To examine regional variations in the gender gap, considering levels of gender equality.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized population-based data from the World Health Survey (WHS) involving 276,647 adults across 6 global regions.
  • Mobility difficulty was assessed by self-reported challenges in movement.
  • Statistical analysis included Poisson regression, controlling for human development and gender-related development indices.

Main Results:

  • Women reported significantly higher mobility difficulty (38%) than men (27%), with a prevalence rate ratio of 1.35 for females.
  • Sociodemographic factors (education, marital status, location) and health conditions (back pain, arthritis, depression) partially explained the gap.
  • The gender gap in mobility difficulty was largest in regions with the greatest gender inequality, such as the Eastern Mediterranean.
