Purpose of the Study:

To assess long-term changes in orthodontic patient dentitions an average of 24 years post-treatment.
To determine if incisor irregularity increases over time and quantify relapse after conservative treatment.

Main Methods:

Analysis of dental casts from 52 women treated with standard edgewise appliances (mid-1970s-early 1980s).
Patients received Hawley or canine-to-canine retainers for 24-32 months.
Measurements included incisor overjet/overbite, buccal segment relationships, and incisor irregularity using digital calipers.

77% of patients had less than 3.5 mm of mandibular incisor irregularity at long-term recall.
Maxillary incisor irregularity correction remained stable.
Buccal segment Class II correction demonstrated stability.
