Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.
Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.

Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in situations...

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-I

Specialized care settings or centers are situated in convenient locations within the community and offer care to a specific group or population. They consist of daycare facilities, mental health facilities, rural health facilities, educational institutions, industries, shelters for the homeless, and rehabilitation facilities.
Daycare centers
They provide several functions. Some facilities care for healthy newborns and children whose parents work, while others are medically focused and care for...

Methods of Documentation VI: Case Management Model

The case management model is a multidisciplinary approach that involves healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines, such as physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and pharmacists, working collaboratively to address the various needs of patients. Each healthcare professional brings unique expertise and perspectives, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the patient's condition and tailoring treatment plans accordingly.
For example, a patient with a chronic illness...

    Area of Science:

    • Pediatric Healthcare
    • Autism Spectrum Disorder Research
    • Health Services Research

    Background:

    • Shared decision-making (SDM) is crucial in pediatric care, particularly for children with complex conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
    • Understanding parent perspectives on SDM in ASD care is essential for improving healthcare quality and patient-centeredness.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the extent of shared decision-making (SDM) reported by parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
    • To examine the association between SDM and parent satisfaction, perceived guidance on controversial issues, and assistance with treatment navigation in ASD care.

    Main Methods:

    • Surveys were developed based on the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) survey.
    • Surveys were administered to 203 parents of children (ages 3-18) with confirmed ASD diagnoses in May 2009.
    • Statistical analyses controlled for demographic variables to assess the relationship between SDM and key outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Higher levels of SDM were significantly associated with greater parent satisfaction with overall healthcare quality (p ≤ .0001).
    • Parents reporting higher SDM were significantly more likely to receive guidance on treatment options (p = .0002) and controversial ASD issues (p = .0322).

    Conclusions:

    • Shared decision-making in primary care is positively associated with increased parent satisfaction for children with autism spectrum disorder.
    • Enhanced SDM can improve perceived guidance on complex treatment choices and controversial topics for families navigating ASD care.
