Cystosarcoma phylloides. A steroid receptor and ultrastructure analysis.

G H Kesterson, N Georgiade, H F Seigler

    Annals of Surgery
    |November 1, 1979
    PubMed
    Summary

Ultrastructure and steroid receptor analysis of cystosarcoma phylloides revealed a heterogeneous tumor. Findings suggest a nonsaturable binding protein, not specific steroid receptors, in these tumors.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Cystosarcoma phylloides is a rare breast tumor with uncertain malignant potential.
    • Previous studies suggested the presence of specific steroid receptors in these tumors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructural characteristics of cystosarcoma phylloides.
    • To analyze steroid receptor status in cystosarcoma phylloides.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to examine tumor ultrastructure.
    • Steroid receptor analysis was performed on tumor tissue samples.

    Main Results:

    • Electron microscopy confirmed a heterogeneous tumor composition with pleomorphic mesenchyme and epithelium.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Steroid receptor analysis identified nonsaturable estrogen and progesterone 4S binding proteins, not specific receptors.
  • Conclusions:

    • The ultrastructure of cystosarcoma phylloides is consistent with prior observations.
    • Steroid receptor analysis indicates the presence of binding proteins rather than specific receptors in cystosarcoma phylloides.
