Summary

Lower extremity amputation (LEA) remains a significant concern, with high mortality and economic costs. Multidisciplinary foot care is urgently needed to reduce amputation rates.

  • Lower extremity amputation (LEA) significantly impacts patients and healthcare costs, despite an overall declining incidence.
  • This study aimed to analyze nontraumatic LEA at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (HUMC) from 2000-2007, focusing on mortality and financial burden.

Observation:

  • The study identified 1169 admissions for nontraumatic LEA in 847 patients.
  • 1-year mortality was 9.1%, and 5-year mortality was 25.6%.
  • Major amputation and increasing age were independent risk factors for 1-year mortality.

Findings:

  • The 1-year re-amputation rate was 26.7%.
  • African American and Hispanic females experienced higher rates of major amputations.
  • Nontraumatic LEA admissions averaged 12.7 hospital days, more than double the average for all admissions, with an estimated cost of over $47 million.
