Development of the Lymphatic System01:15

Development of the Lymphatic System

The development of lymphatic tissues and vessels in embryonic life begins around the fifth week. These structures originate from the mesoderm layer, with lymph sacs emerging from developing veins.
The first lymph sacs to form are the paired jugular lymph sacs located at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. From these sacs, lymphatic capillary plexuses extend to the thorax, upper limbs, neck, and head, eventually forming lymphatic vessels. Each jugular lymph sac maintains a...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

A rare endolymphatic sac tumour caused a man's facial pain and hearing loss. Surgical removal confirmed this low-grade adenocarcinoma, highlighting the need for combined diagnostic methods.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumours are rare, with varied presentations.
  • Endolymphatic sac tumours (ESTs) are uncommon, slow-growing adenocarcinomas originating from the endolymphatic sac.

Observation:

  • A 41-year-old man presented with left-sided facial pain, ear pain, dizziness, nystagmus, and hearing loss.
  • CT scan revealed a destructive lesion at the left CPA.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision was performed, and pathological analysis confirmed an endolymphatic sac tumour.
  • This case illustrates the clinical and radiological features of an EST.

Implications:

  • Accurate diagnosis of ESTs requires integrating clinical symptoms, imaging findings, and histopathological correlation.
  • Early recognition and surgical management are crucial for favorable outcomes in CPA tumours.
