Summary

Total thyroidectomy can lead to hypocalcemia, a condition of low calcium levels. This study found that most patients experienced temporary hypocalcemia after surgery, with only one case of permanent hypocalcemia.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Complications
  • Calcium Metabolism

Context:

  • Total thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the entire thyroid gland.
  • Post-operative hypocalcemia is a known complication following thyroidectomy.
  • Potential causes include parathyroidal deficit, bone calcium deficiency, and calcitonin release.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the incidence and management of hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy.
  • To monitor serum calcium levels in patients post-operation.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for hypocalcemia.

Summary:

  • A study monitored 25 patients undergoing total extracapsular thyroidectomy with preserved parathyroid glands.
  • Eight patients required drug and diet therapy for low calcium levels (<7.5 mg/ml).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Fifteen days post-surgery, 21 patients had subnormal calcium levels, necessitating dihydrotachysterol therapy; only one patient developed permanent hypocalcemia.
  • Impact:

    • Highlights the high incidence of transient hypocalcemia post-thyroidectomy.
    • Demonstrates the efficacy of dihydrotachysterol in managing post-operative hypocalcemia.
    • Informs clinical practice regarding monitoring and treatment strategies for hypocalcemia after thyroid surgery.
