Insomnia and depression have a two-way relationship, with each condition significantly increasing the risk of developing the other. This study highlights the bidirectional nature of these common disorders.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Epidemiology
- Sleep Medicine
Background:
- Depression and insomnia are frequently comorbid conditions.
- The precise directionality of the relationship between depression and insomnia requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine the prospective, bidirectional association between depression and insomnia.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT2 and HUNT3), a prospective population-based cohort.
- Included 24,715 participants with valid responses across both survey waves.
- Assessed the onset of depression or insomnia at HUNT3 among individuals without the other condition at HUNT2.
Main Results:
- Insomnia significantly predicted the subsequent onset of depression (OR=6.2).
- Depression significantly predicted the subsequent onset of insomnia (OR=6.7).
- These associations remained robust after adjusting for potential confounders.
Conclusions:
- Findings support a bidirectional relationship between depression and insomnia.
- Challenges previous research that primarily viewed insomnia as a risk factor for depression.
