Summary

Pasteurized bone (PB) grafts are effective for reconstruction but require specific techniques. Optimal long-term survival of PB is achieved by using small grafts with large contact surfaces to normal bone, preventing absorption and infection.

Main Results:

  • Pasteurized bone (PB) graft survival was observed in 7 out of 14 cases, with 5-year survival at 78.6% and 10-year survival at 47.6%.
  • Osteoarticular grafts had a high failure rate (3/6) due to late absorption or infection.
  • Successful long-term survival was associated with using small PB grafts on large bone-junction surfaces, particularly in composite, intercalary, and pelvic graft cases.

Conclusions:

  • Minimizing PB graft size and maximizing contact surface area with host bone are crucial for preventing bone absorption.
  • These surgical principles enhance PB graft survival and contribute to improved limb function post-reconstruction.
