  • Individually assessed five key heterogeneous reactions and the aerosol radiative influence on photolysis rates.
  • Main Results:

    • Heterogeneous reactions significantly altered O3 formation in urban plumes; NO2 increased O3 by 90 ppb, HO2 decreased it by 33 ppb, and O3 loss reduced it by 31 ppb.
    • Opposite O3 concentration changes were observed between urban and extra-urban areas for NO2, NO3, and N2O5 heterogeneous reactions.
    • Including aerosol radiative influence decreased photolysis rates and significantly reduced O3 by 73 ppb.

    Conclusions:

    • Aerosol heterogeneous reactions and radiative effects play a critical role in O3 formation and must be incorporated into air quality models.
    • High aerosol concentrations are prevalent in China, necessitating the consideration of these processes for accurate urban and regional air quality assessments.
