A novel vection illusion demonstrates self-motion perception without conscious awareness of visual motion. This phenomenon, termed "unexplained vection," challenges traditional models of sensory integration in motion perception.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Neuroscience
- Perception
Background:
- Vection, the illusory sensation of self-motion, is typically induced by visual stimuli depicting motion.
- The underlying mechanisms of vection involve complex sensory integration processes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate a novel vection illusion.
- To explore vection induction without consciously perceived global display motion.
Main Methods:
- A new experimental paradigm was developed to induce vection.
- Participants reported their subjective experience of self-motion.
Main Results:
- Vection was successfully induced in the absence of consciously perceived global visual motion.
- Participants described feeling self-motion without understanding its cause.
Conclusions:
- This finding suggests that vection can arise from non-conscious visual motion processing.
- The results challenge existing theories that rely on conscious perception of visual motion for vection induction.

Absolute Motion Analysis- General Plane Motion
As the drone's propellers rotate, an upward force is generated that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the drone to lift off from the ground. This initial movement of the drone is along a straight path, representing a form of translational motion. In this phase, every point on the drone...
Variation of Atmospheric Pressure
Assuming the air temperature is constant at a given altitude and that the ideal gas law of thermodynamics describes the atmosphere to a good approximation, one can find the variation of atmospheric pressure with height.
Let p(y) be the atmospheric pressure at...
