Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) significantly impacts children's functional abilities.
A validated tool is needed to assess functional performance in young children with ASD.
The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-Children and Youth (ICF-CY) provides a standardized framework.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop an ICF-CY based questionnaire for children with autism.
To evaluate the inter-rater reliability of this novel questionnaire.
To assess the functional performance of preschool-aged children with autism.

Main Methods:

An 118-item ICF-CY based questionnaire was developed.
Inter-rater reliability was assessed in 26 children (3-6 years) with autism using intra-class correlation coefficients.
Functional performance was evaluated in an independent sample of 136 children (3-6 years) with autism.

Main Results:

The questionnaire demonstrated moderate to high inter-rater reliability (ICC range: 0.72-0.97).
Children with autism exhibited significant challenges in voice and speech functions.
High dependency was noted in learning activities, and maximal assistance was required for social interactions and major life activities.

Conclusions:

The ICF-CY based questionnaire is a reliable tool for assessing preschool children with autism.
The questionnaire effectively reflects the functional profile of young children with ASD.
Further research is recommended to validate other psychometric properties.
