Background:

  • Standard septic shock management involves fluid resuscitation and inotropic agents to maintain adequate mean arterial pressure (MAP).
  • Previous strategies aimed to decrease mortality by increasing oxygen delivery (DO2) through various pharmacological interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of enhanced oxygen delivery (DO2) on oxygen consumption (VO2) in critically ill patients.
  • To determine if increased DO2, beyond standard hemodynamic support, influences patient outcomes in septic shock.

Main Methods:

  • Critically ill patients received interventions to increase DO2, including dopamine, dopexamine, prostacyclin, or hypertonic saline.
  • Hemodynamic parameters, including pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and MAP, were monitored.
