Summary

Percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizolysis is used for trigeminal neuralgia and back pain. A case study reveals severe multifidus degeneration and paralysis after lumbar rhizolysis, leading to kyphosis.

Background:

Percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizolysis is a minimally invasive procedure.
It is established for treating trigeminal neuralgia and zygapophyseal joint pain.
Previous studies show success in managing lower back pain.

Observation:

A case of a patient undergoing 3-level lumbar rhizolysis is presented.
The patient developed severe multifidus degeneration.
This degeneration resulted in complete paralysis of lumbar paravertebral muscle function.

Findings:

The patient experienced significant kyphosis post-procedure.
Loss of sagittal balance was a key outcome.
This highlights a potential complication of lumbar rhizolysis.

Implications:

Lumbar rhizolysis may lead to unexpected muscular complications.
Careful patient selection and monitoring are crucial.
Further research is needed to understand long-term effects and prevention strategies.
