  • Speed discrimination sensitivity improved exponentially with age for both slow and fast speeds.
  • Participants consistently showed higher sensitivity to faster reference speeds.
  • Sensitivity to slow speeds exhibited a more prolonged developmental trajectory, not reaching adult levels by age 11, unlike faster speeds.

    • Conclusions:

    • Distinct developmental trajectories for slow and fast speed processing suggest separate neural systems.
    • Late maturation of speed processing, particularly for slower speeds, may stem from neuronal integration limits in motion-sensitive areas during early childhood.
