Summary

Migraine patients show reduced fronto-parietal network connectivity, even without obvious executive function deficits. This reduced connectivity in the middle frontal gyrus correlates with migraine pain intensity.

Background:

  • Converging evidence suggests executive functions (EF) may be impaired in migraine patients during interictal periods.
  • Migraine without aura (MwoA) is a common neurological disorder.
  • Fronto-parietal networks (FPN) are crucial for executive functions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate functional connectivity within the fronto-parietal networks (FPN) in MwoA patients during the interictal period.
  • To compare FPN functional connectivity between MwoA patients and healthy controls (HC).
  • To assess the relationship between FPN functional connectivity, MwoA clinical features, and executive functions.

Main Methods:

  • Resting-state functional MRI (RS-fMRI) was used to compare FPN functional connectivity.
  • 14 MwoA patients and 14 age- and sex-matched HC participated.
  • Voxel-based morphometry was employed to investigate structural differences.

Main Results:

  • No significant executive dysfunction was detected in MwoA patients through neuropsychological testing.
  • MwoA patients exhibited reduced functional connectivity within the right FPN, specifically in the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, compared to HC.

  • MwoA is associated with reduced FPN functional connectivity, even without clinically apparent EF deficits.
