Background:

The transition from Registered Nurse (RN) to Nurse Practitioner (NP) involves significant challenges.
NPs require advanced critical decision-making skills for safe and high-quality patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify learning opportunities for students in a Master of Advanced Nursing Practice curriculum.
To evaluate the effectiveness of reflective case studies as an educational tool.

Main Methods:

A qualitative interpretative study was conducted.
Analysis of 77 reflective case studies from students in an Advanced Nursing Practice program.

Main Results:

Two primary categories of learning opportunities were identified: Direct Care and Increased Performance Demands.
Direct Care included focusing on patient needs, exploring personal values, and providing comprehensive care.
Increased Performance Demands involved managing independence/dependence and emotional challenges.

Conclusions:

Reflective case studies are a powerful educational tool for developing advanced nursing professionals.
This method facilitates active and reflective learning, preparing NPs for increased responsibilities.
The tool supports the development of comprehensive and compassionate patient care.
