Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by altered visual processing.
  • Early cortical responses to visual stimuli may differ in individuals with ASD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate early cortical responses to static and moving visual stimuli in adults with ASD.
  • To compare visual evoked potentials (VEPs) between individuals with ASD and typically developing (TD) individuals.

Main Methods:

  • VEPs were recorded from male participants with ASD (n=9) and TD individuals (n=7).
  • Stimuli included pattern-reversing checks and the onset of expanding or contracting radial rings.
  • Participants were matched for IQ to control for cognitive differences.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in VEPs were found for static pattern stimuli.
  • The ASD group exhibited significantly larger N160 peak amplitudes to the expansion of radial rings.
  • No differences were observed in VEPs for contracting rings or in peak latencies.

Conclusions:

  • Adults with high-functioning ASD demonstrate distinct early cortical processing of motion onset stimuli.
  • These findings suggest specific visual processing differences in ASD.
