Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. Background:

  • Light curing is widely adopted in orthodontic bonding due to advancements in light-curing unit (LCU) technology and intensity.
  • Concerns exist regarding orthodontists' understanding of LCUs, their safety protocols, and potential effects on vision.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate orthodontists' knowledge regarding dental light-curing units (LCUs).
  • To assess orthodontists' awareness of safety aspects associated with LCUs.
  • To investigate the impact of LCUs on color perception among dental professionals.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire was distributed to 120 orthodontic specialists and trainees to gauge knowledge of LCUs and safety.
  • The Farnsworth Munsell 100 hue test was administered to 15 orthodontists and 15 non-orthodontists to evaluate color perception.

Main Results:

  • A high response rate (86.6%) was achieved. Light-emitting diode (LED) LCUs were most common (73.4%).
  • Significant knowledge gaps were identified: 84% unaware of LCU intensity and 67% unaware of wavelength. Many (76-99%) were unsure or took no precautions for patients with cataracts or on photosensitizing medications.
  • Color discrimination tests showed no significant differences between orthodontists and controls, or between genders.

Conclusions:

  • Orthodontists demonstrate inadequate knowledge concerning dental LCUs and their associated hazards.
  • While long-term risks from LCUs are possible, this study did not detect any adverse effects on participants' color discrimination abilities.
