Insights
This study investigated hypercholesterolemia in Luxembourg, finding common risk factors and dietary issues. Ciprofibrate treatment effectively lowered cholesterol and triglycerides with no serious adverse events.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
- Clinical Pharmacology
Background:
- Hypercholesterolemia is a significant cardiovascular risk factor.
- Limited epidemiological data exists for hypercholesterolemia in Luxembourg.
- Understanding associated risk factors and treatment efficacy is crucial for public health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the epidemiology of hypercholesterolemia in Luxembourg.
- To identify associated risk factors and nutritional patterns.
- To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ciprofibrate treatment.
Main Methods:
- A questionnaire-based epidemiological study involving 17 physicians and 113 patients.
- Categorization of hypercholesterolemia types (IIa and IIb).
- Analysis of associated risk factors (diabetes, sedentary lifestyle) and nutritional habits.
- Two-month treatment with ciprofibrate and assessment of lipid profile changes.
Main Results:
- Prevalence of isolated hypercholesterolemia (type IIa) in 43 patients and type IIb in 63 patients.
- High prevalence of associated risk factors, including diabetes (13.2%) and sedentary lifestyle (61%).
- Nutritional assessment revealed common dietary errors.
- Ciprofibrate treatment resulted in a 20% decrease in total cholesterol and a 32% decrease in triglycerides.
- No serious adverse events were reported during the treatment period.
Conclusions:
- Hypercholesterolemia in Luxembourg is associated with significant risk factors and poor dietary habits.
- Ciprofibrate demonstrates effectiveness in reducing total cholesterol and triglycerides.
- The treatment is well-tolerated, suggesting a favorable safety profile for managing hypercholesterolemia.
Abstract:
Epidemiology of hypercholesterolemia in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was studied by the mean of a questionnaire filled out by 17 physicians. 113 patients (50 men and 63 women) were recruited. 43 patients had an isolated hypercholesterolemia (type IIa) and 63 patients had a type IIb. Analysis of associated risk factors showed large variations (13.2% of patients had diabetes, 61% were sedentary). However, 33.5% of patients had at least one associated risk factor. The nutritional assessment showed the well-known dietary errors. A two month's treatment with ciprofibrate has shown a 20% decrease of total cholesterol and a 32% decrease of triglycerides. No serious adverse events were reported.
