Area of Science:

  • Animal Science
  • Nutritional Biochemistry
  • Food Science

Background:

  • Ferulic acid (FRA) is a phenolic compound found in plants, known for its antioxidant and anticancer properties.
  • Research aims to release FRA from lignin to enhance ruminant feed digestibility.
  • Investigating FRA transfer into milk is crucial for understanding its potential bioactivity in dairy products.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the transfer of orally administered ferulic acid (FRA) into the milk of dairy cattle.
  • To determine the physiological transfer rate and time course of FRA in various biological matrices.
  • To assess the impact of FRA supplementation on milk production and composition.

Main Methods:

  • A crossover design study involving six Holstein cows.

Published on: April 13, 2019

  • Administration of a single 150 g dose of pure FRA powder.
  • Intensive sampling of plasma, urine, feces, rumen fluid, and milk over 36 hours post-dosage.
  • Analysis of FRA concentrations in all collected samples.
  • Main Results:

    • Oral ferulic acid (FRA) was successfully transferred into dairy cow milk.
    • FRA concentration in rumen fluid, plasma, urine, and milk increased post-dosage and returned to baseline levels over time.
    • No significant effects of FRA administration on dry matter intake, milk yield, or milk composition were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Orally ingested ferulic acid (FRA) is transported into bovine milk.
    • Physiological transfer of FRA from the rumen to milk occurs within approximately 6.5 hours.
    • Further research is needed to confirm the bioavailability and bioactivity of FRA in milk.
