Summary

Organized splenic hematomas can mimic splenic angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive spleen cancer. Surgical intervention is recommended for splenic masses due to risks of rupture and hemorrhage.

Area of Science:

  • Abdominal Imaging
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Splenic hematomas typically resolve spontaneously after blunt trauma.
  • Rarely, splenic hematomas can organize into calcified masses.
  • Splenic angiosarcoma is an aggressive primary spleen tumor with a poor prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case where organized splenic hematoma mimicked splenic angiosarcoma.
  • To highlight the diagnostic challenges in differentiating these conditions.
  • To discuss appropriate management strategies for splenic masses.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 49-year-old male with a history of traffic accident.
  • Review of clinical presentation, imaging findings, and pathological characteristics.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Discussion of differential diagnoses for splenic masses.
  • Main Results:

    • The patient presented with a splenic mass that radiologically mimicked angiosarcoma.
    • Histopathological examination confirmed an organized splenic hematoma.
    • This case illustrates the potential for benign splenic lesions to resemble malignant tumors.

    Conclusions:

    • Splenic angiosarcoma and organized splenic hematoma share nonspecific clinical findings.
    • Fine-needle biopsy is contraindicated due to hemorrhage risk.
    • Management of splenic masses should involve surgical excision or spleen-preserving surgery.
