A 6-month exercise and counseling program significantly reduced low back pain (LBP)-related off-duty days in young military conscripts. This intervention demonstrated a prophylactic effect, improving military readiness and reducing absence from service.

Area of Science:

  • Military medicine
  • Occupational health
  • Musculoskeletal rehabilitation

Background:

  • Basic military training poses significant physical demands on the spine.
  • Low back pain (LBP) is a common cause of morbidity and absence from military service.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a 6-month neuromuscular exercise and counseling program for reducing LBP incidence and disability in young conscripts.
  • To assess the program's effectiveness in a compulsory military service setting.

Main Methods:

  • Controlled intervention with group randomization involving 1409 conscripts over two years.
  • Prospective follow-up of 690 conscripts in an intervention group (antitank, engineer) and a control group (signal, mortar) for 6 months.
  • Intervention focused on improving lumbar neutral zone control and avoiding full lumbar flexion during daily tasks.

Operational and Intervention Effects of Targeted Tuina in Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Model Rabbits

Published on: July 21, 2023

Main Results:

  • Significantly decreased incidence of off-duty days due to LBP in the intervention group (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.42, P = 0.035).
  • A decreasing trend, though not statistically significant, was observed for LBP cases, clinic visits, and severe LBP cases.

Conclusions:

  • Exercise and education targeting lumbar neutral zone control offer a prophylactic effect against LBP-related off-duty days in the military.
  • The findings support the implementation of such programs within military service for young, healthy men.
