Summary

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) can rarely cause dysphagia. This case highlights a patient whose swallowing difficulties were successfully managed with conservative treatment for DISH.

  • Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a common condition, typically asymptomatic.
  • Rarely, DISH can manifest with symptoms related to airway or esophageal compression.

Observation:

  • A 70-year-old male presented with a four-month history of sore throat, dysphagia, and foreign body sensation.
  • Laryngoscopy and imaging revealed a large bony mass causing anterior hypopharyngeal wall compression, consistent with DISH involving five vertebral bodies.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with dysphagia secondary to DISH.
  • Conservative management with anti-inflammatory drugs provided symptomatic relief.
