Rab GTPases act in a regulated cascade during membrane fusion, helping the lipid bilayers mix. The Rab family of proteins are active when bound to GTP, and inactive when bound to GDP. Hence, they act as guanine nucleotide-dependent molecular switches. Rab-GTP recognizes and binds to long or short-range tethering proteins to capture the target vesicle. Summary

Bath salt intoxication often causes severe psychiatric symptoms, but these are usually short-lived. Emergency psychiatric detention may be avoidable with closer emergency department monitoring for bath salt abuse patients.

Background:

  • Bath salts are increasingly abused, leading to more emergency department (ED) visits.
  • Bath salt intoxication can result in serious physiological and psychiatric complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report data from 10 cases of bath salt intoxication with severe psychiatric symptoms.
  • To evaluate the need for emergency psychiatric detention in these cases.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 10 patients with bath salt intoxication.
  • Analysis of psychiatric symptoms and need for Physician Emergency Certificate (PEC).

Main Results:

  • Patients experienced mild, transient physiological effects.
  • Severe psychiatric symptoms were short-lived, with most PECs rescinded before inpatient admission.
  • The majority of patients did not require inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.

Conclusions:

  • Severe psychiatric symptoms from bath salt intoxication may resolve quickly.
  • Extended ED monitoring might prevent unnecessary psychiatric detentions.
  • Further research is needed on the natural course of bath salt-induced psychosis.
