Circulating lymphangiogenic factors in preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is linked to a pro-lymphangiogenic state, indicated by altered levels of VEGF-C and its receptors. This may be a compensatory response to edema and hypertension in pregnancy.

- Plasma levels of VEGF-C, sVEGFR-1, sVEGFR-2, and sVEGFR-3 were measured.
- Analysis was conducted in third-trimester pregnant women with PE (n=20), gestational hypertension (GHTN, n=20), and normotensive pregnancies (NP, n=20).
Main Results:
- sVEGFR-1 levels were significantly higher in PE compared to GHTN and NP.
- VEGF-C levels were higher in PE compared to GHTN, but not NP.
- sVEGFR-3 levels were significantly lower in PE compared to NP.
- The ratio of sVEGFR-2 + sVEGFR-3/VEGF-C was significantly lower in PE compared to GHTN and NP.
Conclusions:
- PE is characterized by a pro-lymphangiogenic state, evidenced by decreased sVEGFR-3, slightly decreased sVEGFR-2, increased VEGF-C, and a lower sVEGFR-2 + sVEGFR-3/VEGF-C ratio.
- This pro-lymphangiogenic state may be a compensatory mechanism for edema and hypertension in PE.
- Further research is needed to clarify the clinical significance of altered lymphangiogenic signaling in PE.
