Summary

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using hypericin effectively induces apoptosis in U937 cancer cells. Optimal results were achieved with specific LED lamps and a 3-hour incubation period post-irradiation, leading to near-complete cell death.

    • LED lamps (599 nm, 595 nm) achieved near-complete cell death after 5-hour incubation following 15-minute irradiation.

    Conclusions:

    • Hypericin-PDT is effective in inducing apoptosis in U937 cells.
    • A post-irradiation incubation period exceeding 3 hours is necessary for maximal cell death.
    • Low-intensity LED lamps, combined with appropriate hypericin concentration and incubation, yield superior apoptosis rates in U937 cells.
