  • To compare executive functioning in current users, previous users, and non-users.

  • Utilized the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version (BRIEF-A) self-report measure.
  • Recruited 42 current ecstasy/polydrug users, 18 previous users (abstinent ≥ 6 months), and 50 non-users.

Main Results:

  • Current users reported significantly worse executive functioning than previous users and non-users across multiple domains (inhibition, working memory, planning, etc.).

  • Nicotine consumption emerged as a significant predictor of executive dysfunction, more so than ecstasy use frequency for several domains.

Conclusions:

  • Ongoing ecstasy/polydrug use is associated with self-reported executive dysfunction in daily life.
  • The observed deficits appear linked to current use patterns rather than prior use or other illicit substances.
  • Nicotine consumption presents an unexpected but significant association with executive dysfunction in this population.
