Background:

  • Conducted factor analysis on each scale separately and on combined items.

  • Factor analysis indicated that neither the PAS nor the DES adequately measured the hypothesized three dimensions of dissociation.
  • A single, reliable factor emerged for each scale, suggesting unidimensionality.
  • Combined item analysis revealed statistically correlated but conceptually distinct dimensions.

Conclusions:

  • The current forms of the PAS and DES may be best used to measure single dimensions: affect-control disturbances (PAS) and cognition-control disturbances (DES).
  • Further scale development and research into response formats are recommended to improve the measurement of dissociation.
