Summary

Low-level laser stimulation, even outside acupoints, can alter brain activity. This study found it increased alpha and theta brainwaves, similar to meditation effects, for at least 15 minutes.

Background:

  • Acupuncture and laser therapy are known to activate the brain via sensory pathways.
  • The effects of non-acupoint, low-level laser stimulation on brain activity remain largely unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if insensible low-level laser stimulation outside acupoints can induce electroencephalographic (EEG) changes.
  • To analyze the impact of laser stimulation on different EEG frequency bands.

Main Methods:

  • A low-level laser array stimulator (830 nm wavelength, 7 mW output power, 10 Hz) was used for palm stimulation.
  • Electroencephalographic (EEG) data were recorded before, during, and after laser stimulation.
  • Amplitude powers of EEG frequency bands (alpha, theta, beta) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Low-level laser stimulation significantly increased alpha rhythm and theta wave power, primarily in posterior brain regions.
  • These EEG changes persisted for at least 15 minutes post-stimulation.
  • Beta activity power decreased in anterior brain regions following laser stimulation.

Conclusions:

  • Insensible low-level laser stimulation outside acupoints can modulate EEG activity.
  • The observed EEG alterations, including increased alpha and theta power, resemble patterns seen during meditation.
  • This suggests a potential non-invasive method for brain modulation.
