Facility annual reports (FARs) from the Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) program were useful for nursing home administrators. These reports on care quality and work life prompted action in most facilities.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Healthcare Management
- Nursing Home Administration
Background:
- Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) program aims to enhance nursing home care quality and provider work-life.
- Research conducted across 36 nursing homes in Canadian Prairie Provinces.
Purpose of the Study:
- Evaluate the usefulness, meaningfulness, and understandability of facility annual reports (FARs) from administrators' perspectives.
- Assess the impact of FARs on administrative decision-making and actions within nursing homes.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional survey design with structured telephone interviews.
- Facility annual reports (FARs) developed collaboratively with administrators.
- FARs presented data on workplace culture, feedback processes, job satisfaction, and staff burnout.
- Analysis included descriptive/inferential statistics and content analysis of open-ended responses.
Main Results:
- Thirty-one administrators (32 facilities) participated; 24 found FARs useful, meaningful, and understandable.
- Six administrators took action, and 18 planned actions based on FAR findings.
- Administrators appreciated longitudinal and comparative data; requested additional information on resident behaviors and information sharing.
Conclusions:
- Brief facility annual reports (FARs) effectively presented relevant data to nursing home administrators.
- The data presented in FARs prompted a majority of administrators to plan or initiate actions within their facilities.
