Summary

A rare case of multicentric leiomyosarcoma, a type of smooth muscle tumor, was found in the colon of a patient with ulcerative colitis. This is the first reported instance of multiple colon leiomyosarcomas linked to this inflammatory bowel disease.

Background:

  • Smooth muscle cell tumors of the large bowel are exceptionally rare.
  • Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease with known associations with colorectal cancer, but not typically smooth muscle tumors.

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old patient with a 5-year history of ulcerative colitis presented with uncontrollable bleeding.
  • A proctocolectomy revealed over 50 polypous tumors, up to 5 cm in diameter, throughout the colon.

Findings:

  • All observed colonic tumors were histologically classified as leiomyosarcomas.
  • This represents a unique presentation of multicentric leiomyosarcoma of the colon.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential, previously unrecognized association between ulcerative colitis and the development of multicentric colonic leiomyosarcomas.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the potential link and underlying mechanisms between inflammatory bowel disease and smooth muscle neoplasms of the colon.
