Summary

Cricopharyngeal dysfunction, a swallowing disorder, is linked to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Myotomy surgery improved swallowing and respiratory distress in some COPD patients with this condition.

Background:

  • Cricopharyngeal dysfunction is a known cause of dysphagia.
  • No prior studies have established a link between cricopharyngeal dysfunction and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Observation:

  • Three patients with frequent, severe COPD exacerbations exhibited significant cricopharyngeal dysfunction and aspiration.
  • Pharyngoesophageal examinations with videotaping were conducted on 22 additional nonrandomized COPD patients.
  • Severe cricopharyngeal dysfunction was identified in 17 elderly COPD patients.

Findings:

  • Deglutition disorders were reported by 15 of the 17 patients with cricopharyngeal dysfunction.
  • Cricopharyngeal myotomy led to improved swallowing in eight patients.
